Stanford Health Care sought to expand their existing Breast Imaging Center by adding 2 Ultrasound Rooms, 2 Digital Mammography Rooms, patient subwaiting lounge, consult and support spaces as well as consolidate functional staff spaces and cosmetically enhance the overall department. Through experiential insights and interviews with staff, the design team proposed multiple changes to the Client’s program such as locating a patient interview space in procedure rooms with softer furniture and finishes separate from the staff workspace, providing a focal element to patients to aid in positive distraction during scans, and imparting an immersive audio/video experience throughout the department that eases anxiety and complements an outdoor healing garden.
